ABOUT DAVID THURMAN

I have worked as an attorney in Charlotte, North Carolina since 1983, and I am the Senior Partner of the law firm of THURMAN, WILSON, BOUTWELL & GALVIN, P.A.

In the early 1990’s, I received an intense and clear call to work in inner city and refugee ministry in Charlotte and to use soccer as a means to develop mentor relationships. Untrained and inexperienced, I began by coaching soccer teams that included young men from all over the world and by visiting refugee families with different ethnicities, cultures, languages, and religions. As relationships developed, I searched for pathways to discipleship. Either alone or in partnership with coworkers with similar vision, my efforts included:

  • Weekly soccer outreach sessions (20 years)

  • A weekly Bible club for young men - Boyz Club (15 years)

  • A weekly discipleship group for young men (now adults) - Monday night Bible study (14 years)

  • A weekly cell group for outreach leaders (12 years)

  • A monthly luncheon for outreach ministry leaders in Charlotte (10 years)

MINISTRY TRAINING AND THE CALL SERIES

After coaching soccer teams for 12 years, I sensed my call shift to focus on teaching about discipleship and training other believers with similar calls to outreach ministry. There was such great need and comparatively so few persons working to fulfill that need. I wrote THE CALL books (3 books in the series) to train outreach workers.

In partnership with other outreach ministries in Charlotte, my coworkers and I began developing a yearlong residency program for the purpose of training persons interested in inner city and refugee ministry. Through the years, I have helped to train interns and residents for six ministries in Charlotte. The consistent theme of THE CALL books, and the lessons that complement them, is sustainable, deep, long term discipleship that leads to fruitfulness. The residency training is based on three main components:

  • Instruction about ministry

  • Experience in ministry to apply and to instill the instruction

  • Individual mentoring to assist in learning and in spiritual growth

One area that we encourage ministry residents to develop is a deep and rich devotional life. SURRENDER AND TRUST was written as a tool for residents to use for spiritual healing and for growth in their walk with the Lord which is the foundation from which all Christian ministry occurs.

My prayer is that SURRENDER AND TRUST will assist you in your journey with the Lord and encourage you as you develop a deeper and richer relationship with Him. My contact email is: wdavidthurman@gmail.com.
